Project: Bus Stop Bench Cushion
Location: Corner of Glendale and Silverlake Blvd. Los Angeles, CA
Date: 4/1/07 - 4/14/07

Statement:
Most contemporary public bench designs incorporate intermediate dividers to prevent people from laying down or sleeping. In Los Anßgeles, slight raised separations between individual seats become a subtle demonstration of the power of city government to control the use of public space. In protest of this aggressive bench design, I plan to assemble 6(20x20") vinyl covered cushions to fit into bus stop bench separations so person can lie comfortably across the bench without feeling the prod of city government in their back.

The cushions will be installed at 2 different bus stop sites and will remain for two weeks. I will periodically check in on the cushions to document any evidence of persons laying down or sleeping.
